Måneskin. The Glam of Generation Z

Born in the 1990s, Generation Z – Centennial or Postmillennial – is characterized by its unlimited access to information and multi-conversational nature, that is, being able to carry multiple conversations at the same time. The expression “you create content, then you exist” is another way of defining those who live with a sense of immediacy.

Despite the efforts of the Mass Media in portraying the Generation Z as being hypersusceptible, a strong sense of social and environmental justice marks this generational identity. Very conscious and up to date with identity and sexual diversity. Their vulnerability is not a weakness. It is their strength.

Nonconformists also from a musical standpoint, Måneskin, the band made up of vocalist Damiano David, bassist Victoria De Angelis, percussionist Ethan Torchio and guitarist Thomas Raggi, shares the values of that youth 3.0. which has not grown up under the influence of rock music and ideology.

The band returns to rock as a clear tribute to the Glam philosophy, using it as a way to convey the message and language of a generation that lives beyond binaries.

Måneskin do not create Glam Rock but they do savor and reinvent it. We explore the history and keys to Glam Rock with this band that you can enjoy live at Diversity València.

Pioneering figures in Glam Rock

Everyone knows the iconic David Bowie and while most consider him the father of Glam, he was not. What Bowie did do was to bring the movement to its most artistic and refined expression and turn it into a mass phenomenon, communicating its aesthetics from a clear philosophy that connected with the audience. Much to his credit, but that does not make him the father of the movement.

On the other hand, it is very difficult to define a single figure as the sole responsible for this genre that peaked between 1971 and the 80s. Movements with a specific aesthetic and name always borrow ideas from previous referents.

According to Music Radar Clan, a Channel specializing in music, Glam takes its name from Glamour, inherent to a substantial part of music history. Figures like Elton John or Gary Glitter showed off eye-catching outfits with messages that challenged any preconceived ideas. Mainly, those of gender norms.

Glam Rock touches again on the groundbreaking presence of the great rock legends, far from wanting to go unnoticed. That is one of its ingredients, along with distorted guitars —inherited from the preceding psychedelic music—, melancholic ballads and the return to fresher and simpler melodies. Catchier and with direct messages.

For the movement sought to get away from those instrumental songs of long developments and transitions that boomed between 1966 and 1969 with bands such as Pink Floyd or The Doors.

The theatricality, the opera imaginary as aesthetic referent and the bordering on sexual and gender norms are other characteristics of Glam. Now it makes sense considering Måneskin as such, right?

If Glam is to be all the above, many experts will agree that there is a figure that meets all the requirements to be considered the “Daddy” of the movement, for he was ahead of Glam’s time of greatest splendor. Back in the sixties, Marc Bolan – leader of T. Rex – had been walking, so to speak, that way.

In this sense, Electric Warrior can be considered the first Glam music album.

Jobriath and Bowie

Every movement has its lights and shades and Glam is not an exception. American artist Jobriath’s story is one of these, for he had to live all his life overshadowed by Bowie with whom he was always compared.

Despite the tremendous investment made to launch his career, with fireworks and sparing no expense, his proposal never caught on, even when Jobriath was, in fact, the artist who best embodied Glam philosophy in real life. He was one of the first superstars to openly come out as gay, and his life was not easy at all, precisely because of that.

Unfairly regarded as “The American Bowie” or “The Man Who Felt to Earth”, the truth is that Jobriath also inspired two of the most prominent icons of glam: Marc Bolan and David Bowie. Social subversion could be accepted in the art scene, but it was still heavily punished in real life. The moral of this story is that glitter is accepted on stage, but it is difficult to be accepted if it’s part of your identity.

This was the strange paradox in which the artist found himself.

On the side of success was Bowie, with his character Ziggy Stardust. His album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, is considered Glam music crown jewel.

Bowie explored all domains: art, fashion, music … For this and other reasons, he was in all comparisons.

What’s new in the Måneskin formula?

We highly recommend this video by youtuber Jose M. on Måneskin.

Despite the obvious Glam inspired aesthetics and the echoes of sexual ambiguity and other motifs reminiscent of the movement, the truth is that the group is also rooted in a time when discourses on feminism, new masculinities and sexual diversity are on the rise.

The band coincides in creating catchy and straightforward songs and in the presence of ballads like  Torna a casa  and finds its difference in the significant role played by Måneskin’s only female member. A central pillar, from which we can look toward Female Glam referents such as The Runaways.

Living together, as the band boasts in its Social Media and the fact that Victoria De Angelis has not been sexualized as sometimes happens in other mixed bands has been highlighted. In fact, in most images, there is a social role change between her and her companions, while in others they tend to use the same “uniform”.

Although they also sing in English, the group stands out for its commitment to the Italian language. It is not common for this language to reach the most prestigious lists of pop-rock music. The irreverent song Zitti e buoni became the most listened to Italian song in a single day.

Besides reliability and musical quality, the group offers a rebellious and respectful intergenerational conversation from the standpoint of a youth that no longer believes so much in binaries.

The band’s popularity has been on the rise ever since its global explosion and every new step taken, every video, every new image, every cover, every collaboration shows that their footsteps are not only strong but firm.

The band’s American projection and the enthusiastic reception from US fans do nothing but strengthen their career and fulfill the band’s deepest dreams. Collaborating with one of their glam punk idols, Iggy Pop, on the song  I wanna be your slave plus being invited by The Rolling Stones themselves to open one show of their ongoing tour, has shocked Måneskin as they have expressed in social networks:

“Can’t believe to finally announce this: we’re gonna open for the Rolling Stones on November the 6th at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Can hardly wait.”.
